{"id":1012,"date":"2012-04-03T21:23:22","date_gmt":"2012-04-03T20:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/six40winks.com\/?p=1012"},"modified":"2012-04-03T21:23:22","modified_gmt":"2012-04-03T20:23:22","slug":"days-2627-sleep-deprivation-and-good-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/?p=1012","title":{"rendered":"Days 26\/27 &#8211; Sleep deprivation and good citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Day 26:\u00a0<\/strong> It was a difficult morning.\u00a0 This was most likely due to yesterday&#8217;s strange naps (predominantly light sleep) which didn&#8217;t feel very re-energizing and left me tired through much of the day.<\/p>\n<p>(2012\/04\/02, (3:21,5, &#8220;eyes feel more irritated than normal&#8221;), (3:25,4.5,&#8221;decaf tea&#8221;), (3:49,3,&#8221;more sleepy than normal. nodding&#8221;), (4:10,7,&#8221;back to normal&#8221;), (4:53,5), (4:58,4, &#8220;laying on the sofa. OK in kitchen&#8221;), (5:10,6, &#8220;doing chores&#8221;), (5:30,3,&#8221;nodding off, laying on sofa&#8221;), (5:53,4,&#8221;very sleepy&#8221;),(6:05,6,&#8221;chores&#8221;),(6:20,5,&#8221;hard to program and write&#8221;), (7:10,7,&#8221;reading&#8221;), (17:50,7,&#8221;tired eyes&#8221;), (22:00,6,&#8221;movie watching, tired eyes&#8221;)).<\/p>\n<p>However the rest of the day was normal.\u00a0 Good level of work with about 10h of computer and 1h of exercise, &#8230; with some cooking and talking sprinkled in for good measure.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1025\" style=\"width: 789px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402_core_hypnogram-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1025\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1025\" title=\"20120402_core_hypnogram\" src=\"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402_core_hypnogram-1.png\" alt=\"sleeping schedule and sleep phases on everyman polyphasic sleep\" width=\"779\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402_core_hypnogram-1.png 779w, https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402_core_hypnogram-1-300x54.png 300w, https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120402_core_hypnogram-1-768x138.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 779px) 100vw, 779px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">sleep phases, core sleep and naps on April 2nd 2012<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Day 27:\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh Boy!\u00a0 It happened again!\u00a0 My last nap yesterday wasn&#8217;t ideal (see only <strong>16mn<\/strong> above) and to make things worse, when I woke up at <strong>2:45<\/strong> it was in the middle of light sleep (which makes me groggy) &#8230; so I must have snoozed and totally overslept.\u00a0 Of course by &#8220;<em>overslept<\/em>&#8221; I mean sleeping <strong>5h55<\/strong>.\u00a0 But surprisingly I felt wide awake after that.\u00a0 I felt a little tired around <strong>9am<\/strong> for <strong>20mn<\/strong> but it was pretty much impossible to nap at mid-day<strong>, <\/strong>so I had to wait until <strong>16:30<\/strong>.\u00a0 I can definitely say that my body is starting to adapt in some form or another.\u00a0\u00a0 This can of course be seen as a failure to stick to the schedule, but I see the other side of the coin:\u00a0 a few months ago, when I slept <strong>6h <\/strong>at night I would feel tired, and would have a horrible time getting out of bed (I had to go to work without my 8h!!?).\u00a0 Today, I sleep <strong>5h55<\/strong> &#8230; and I feel incredibly rested and awake.\u00a0 So clearly, in spite of the mess of the past couple of days and in spite of this over-sleeping something is happening inside me.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;m not yet convinced about the possibility of fully adapting.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1027\" style=\"width: 770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120403_core_hypnogram-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1027\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1027\" title=\"20120403_core_hypnogram\" src=\"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120403_core_hypnogram-1.png\" alt=\"sleep schedule on everyman-3 with 3 naps \" width=\"760\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120403_core_hypnogram-1.png 760w, https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120403_core_hypnogram-1-300x56.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1027\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">sleeping schedule with oversleeping, April 3rd 2012<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Today I experienced a somewhat dramatic event.\u00a0 And just to show that I still keep my mental functions in working order (well, as good or bad as they used to be anyway), I&#8217;ll relate it here.\u00a0 After my afternoon nap I went for a <strong>12km<\/strong> bike ride to exercise and get some chores done.\u00a0 On the way back I saw quite a bit of smoke in a field and attributed it to agricultural waste burning.\u00a0 <em>That farmer is burning a lot of stuff<\/em> _ I thought.\u00a0 But the flames were unusually high.\u00a0 It got me worried.\u00a0 I stopped.\u00a0 <em>Was anyone supervising that fire?<\/em>.\u00a0 It was too far to see. And then &#8230; black smoke, &#8230; and what looked like the tire of a truck.\u00a0 Hum &#8230; dodgy!\u00a0 I stopped a runner:\u00a0 &#8220;<em>can you tell me this address?\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you think it looks unusual?<\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 That monophasic runner ignored my concerns and ran on with his ipod.\u00a0 But something wasn&#8217;t right.\u00a0 So I stopped another cyclist, urged him to give me the address and I phoned the fire brigade straight away.\u00a0 A few minutes later I trespassed onto their field to wave, shout and try to alert them.\u00a0 The fire was already out of control eating away at a tractor, a pile of grass and starting with a little woodland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/u\/0\/photos\/108007282485500573791\/albums\/5728330140615330977\/5728330138297513794\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"fire in a farm\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/-m9T_OBoo9Fg\/T38d6SljN0I\/AAAAAAAAATU\/HA_MOQQNNJA\/s1032\/2012-04-03+17.47.08.jpg\" alt=\"fire in a farm\" width=\"566\" height=\"424\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl id=\"\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 576px;\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">fire in a nearby farm<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fortunately the fire brigade arrived at\u00a0 this moment (picture) and were able to get the fire under control in 2h.<\/p>\n<p>As a rough estimate, if I&#8217;ve been on Everyman for <strong>24<\/strong> days (the first 2 were <strong>5h<\/strong> and <strong>4h<\/strong> ), then I&#8217;ve lost 24*(8 &#8211; 4.5) = <strong>84h<\/strong> of sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately it seems <strong>84h<\/strong> of sleep deprivation haven&#8217;t killed my empathy, emergency reaction time, and good citizenship!<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s now see how oversleeping (<strong>5h20mn<\/strong> total) affects me tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Day 26:\u00a0 It was a difficult morning.\u00a0 This was most likely due to yesterday&#8217;s strange naps (predominantly light sleep) which didn&#8217;t feel very re-energizing and left me tired through much of the day.
