{"id":514,"date":"2012-03-18T19:40:18","date_gmt":"2012-03-18T19:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/six40winks.com\/?p=514"},"modified":"2012-03-18T19:40:18","modified_gmt":"2012-03-18T19:40:18","slug":"day-11-adapting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/?p=514","title":{"rendered":"Day 11 &#8211; adapting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The quest continues!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m back to sleeping every nap.\u00a0 And falling asleep in less than <strong>10mn<\/strong> every time.\u00a0 Waking up at <strong>2am<\/strong> feels easy (with a soft alarm) and I can get to work after <strong>10<\/strong> or <strong>15mn<\/strong>. I&#8217;m starting to look for patterns to try and optimize the naps and their phases.\u00a0 According to the <em>literature<\/em> some of the critical things are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Timing of the nap (not too late, not too early.\u00a0 On everyman 1\/2h to 1h of margin is recommended)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>This obviously has social consequences as one cannot make an exception in the middle of a party, a movie or a crucial meeting with a customer (&#8220;<em>If you&#8217;ll excuse me I&#8217;m going to bed, thank you!<\/em>&#8220;).\u00a0 One has to avoid getting caught by brilliant ideas for hours &#8230;(or at least put the inspiration on hold for 20mn!).\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try to document this better.\u00a0 When I&#8217;m fully adapted I might carry out some controlled experiments shifting naps around.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Duration of the nap (trying to wake up in REM or at the end not to feel groggy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Waking up in REM (feeling like you just got out of a dream) feels more refreshing.\u00a0 I can definitely confirm this.\u00a0 Waking up from light sleep makes me tired &#8230; but I don&#8217;t have much data for waking up in deep sleep.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll let you know when I get more statistically significant results.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Diet, caffeine, sport, stress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>It is quite astonishing that although I sleep around <strong>4.5h\/day<\/strong> I don&#8217;t consume any caffeine.\u00a0 This has to be one of the hardest parts of the experiment.\u00a0 I love the smell or morning coffee and I certainly look like a drug addict staring at my girlfriend&#8217;s cup in the morning &#8230; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gimme your coffee<\/span>!!!\u00a0\u00a0 But fortunately she&#8217;s supportive and drinks it quickly keeping temptation at bay.\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite possible that a sip of coffee tripped the whole experiment last week, so I&#8217;m just trying to adapt.\u00a0 Stress is yet to manifest its consequences &#8230; but I do have good self-control in that department.\u00a0 Concerning sport I&#8217;m taking it very easy for now.\u00a0 I&#8217;m pushing my body to new limits, so I don&#8217;t want to overexert it with sore muscles.\u00a0 However I continue with light sport (quick walk, cycle or jogg) and will increase intensity when I feel ready and strong.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Check out the\u00a0 last 7 days below,<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->(click to enlarge):<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-514 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-thumbnail'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/six40winks.com\/?attachment_id=540'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/six40winks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/20120318_11to18-1-150x150.png\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"polyphasic sleeping log for March 2012, 7 days\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-1-540\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt>\n\t\t\t\t<dd class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-1-540'>\n\t\t\t\t7 days of polyphasic Everyman-3330\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Note that the right column shows the total number of hours slept.<br \/>\n(2012\/03\/18, (2:30, 4, &#8220;just woke up&#8221;), (3:40, 5, &#8220;getting there&#8221;), (2:54, 7, &#8220;computer work&#8221;), (3:40, 6.5, &#8220;web design&#8221;) ,(4:14,5, &#8220;time for break&#8221;), (4:20,7, &#8220;eat orange with honey&#8221;), (4:45,6,&#8221;tired eyes&#8221;) ,(5:00,4,&#8221;occasional nod off&#8221;), (6:30,4,&#8221;ready to nap&#8221;), (7:20,8,&#8221;very refreshed&#8221;),(11:20,7,&#8221;good to work&#8221;),(12:00,6,&#8221;not tired enough for nap&#8221;), (12:30,6,&#8221;nap&#8221;),(13:00) &#8230; ok all afternoon evening until 23h)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The quest continues!
