Why do we dream? where, when and how? Michel Jouvet<\/strong>&gt;&gt;<\/address>\n<p>The author, <a title=\"Michel Jouvet\" href=\"http:\/\/psychology.wikia.com\/wiki\/Michel_Jouvet\">Dr. Jouvet<\/a> is a Neurobiologist (Medical doctor by training) who has contributed extensively to sleep research.\u00a0 In fact he was the first person to describe and measure REM sleep (called paradoxical sleep back then).<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t actually order it.\u00a0 It was a surprise gift, sent from France with a note.\u00a0 A note of encouragement, curiosity, scepticism and wonderment.\u00a0 It was sent by my French uncle <em>Pouch<\/em> who has also been following this blog.\u00a0 And it is quite probably thanks to him that this blog exists to begin with.\u00a0 He is the culprit (and I&#8217;m thankful) for my scientific curiosity.\u00a0 Throughout the years he never lost his sense of wonder for the mysteries of science and has gathered a broad scientific culture (particularly for the contributions of French scientists).\u00a0 Every time he would visit us in Madrid, a fascinating book would accompany him.\u00a0 And so I discovered great physics and math thinkers in my teens:\u00a0 <a title=\"Henri Poincar\u00e9 wiki\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henri_Poincar%C3%A9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H. Poincar\u00e9<\/a>, <a title=\"Laurent Nottale wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/www.priceminister.com\/offer\/buy\/210991\/Nottale-L-La-Relativite-Dans-Tous-Ses-Etats-Livre.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laurent Nottale<\/a>, <a title=\"Werner Heisenberg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Teil-Das-Ganze-Gesprache-Atomphysik\/dp\/3492222978?tag=duckduckgo-d-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">W. Heisenberg<\/a>, <a title=\"Louis de Broglie\" href=\"http:\/\/livre.fnac.com\/a2037632\/Sven-Ortoli-Le-cantique-des-quantiques\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L. De Broglie<\/a>, R. <a title=\"roger penrose\" href=\"http:\/\/plus.maths.org\/content\/os\/issue18\/features\/penrose\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penrose<\/a>, <a title=\"paul davies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/1446223.Space_And_Time_In_The_Modern_Universe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Einstein<\/a>.\u00a0 A bit later, at university he also lent me great neuroscience by\u00a0 <a title=\"Jean Pierre Changeux\" href=\"http:\/\/www.librairiedialogues.fr\/livre\/574584-l-homme-neuronal-jean-pierre-changeux-fayard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J. P. Changeux<\/a>, <a title=\"Michel Jouvet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.odilejacob.fr\/catalogue\/sciences\/neurosciences\/sommeil-et-le-reve_9782738101549.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M. Jouvet<\/a>, and <a title=\"John Eccles\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/The-Self-Its-Brain-Interactionism\/dp\/0415058988?tag=duckduckgo-d-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J. Eccles and Popper<\/a> among others.<\/p>\n<p>This time he&#8217;s sent another one of Jouvet&#8217;s books, with lots of interesting facts that will be great to share in this blog. \u00a0Thank you! \u00a0And I, in turn, will be sharing little &#8220;Sleep Trivia&#8221; or &#8220;Sleep Facts&#8221; from the book like this one:<\/p>\n<p>[fact_quote]If moles are blind, can they exhibit rapid eye movement or REM? \u00a0The term REM is somewhat unfortunate as blind animals (even without eyes) will also experience what is better named\u00a0<a title=\"paradoxical sleep definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esrs.eu\/uploads\/tx_mnmesrscal\/Sommeil09-1ereAnnonce-BD.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paradoxical sleep<\/a>. The key is in the frequency of the brain waves, the breathing and the low muscle tone [<a title=\"paradoxical sleep definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.journalsleep.org\/Articles\/240201.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ref-PDF<\/a>].\u00a0 It is paradoxical because the brain seems to be awake, but the body is completely relaxed.
