days 13/14 – pineal gland explosions

Hello again.

I’m still alive.  Unlike some of you have suggested (Sergio!) my pineal gland has not exploded, and I have not finally fallen asleep for 3 days :).  I was just a little busy, that’s all.  The processing of the sleep graphs is a lengthy and repetitive task which I’m still automating.  But until then it’s quite time consuming.   For now you can find all my sleep data on a public evernote notebook  .   The Elephant is the Evernote logo (as in elephant memory), and evernote is a very useful note-taking, web-clipping application.  I can push a button on my phone and upload my sleep charts to it, so pretty useful!  From those charts I create these overviews (by hand with image editor gimp):

As you can see the days 13 and 14 were not ideal in terms of naps.  It would either take me long to fall asleep (red tall bars) or I would get little REM (green bars).  In spite of that I am feeling surprisingly well.  However I wouldn’t say that my body handles the naps equally.  There is still an inertia in my body telling me that the night is for sleeping and the day to be awake.  However it’s starting to get confused.  My 7am naps have usually been 80% REM, re-energising and easy to fall into.  The last days have shown light sleep and 10 – 15mn of waiting.   The 12am and 5pm used to be a ladder: wake->light->deep.  But weird patterns are showing up.  This may be my body adapting.  We’ll see the evolution in the next days.

Here are my subjective annotations (the 1-10 scale can be found in this post):

(2012/03/20, (2:00, 6, “just woke up”), (3:50, 7, “coding”), (4:27, 6, “computer work, bit sleepy”), (5:40,6,”getting tired for reading”), (6:40,4,”nodding off”), (7:35,5),(7:40,6, “nap inertia from light sleep”),(8:30,7.5), (11:30,7.5)).  Normal the rest of the day with light sleep sensation for the other naps.

(2012/03/21, (2:00, 6, “just woke up”), (3:50, 7, “coding”), (4:24, 6, “learning, first sign of sleepy”), (4:40,7,”eat something”),(5:33,6,”second wave of sleepy”),(5:50,4),(6:35,4),(6:39,5),(6:40,6),(7:15,4),(7:30,7),(17:00,7),(17:30,6,”tired eyes”),(18:00,5,”naptime”)) Normal the rest of the day with light sleep sensation for the other nap.
